This perfect, petite example of engraved vintage crystal comes from the fourth generation of glass carvers in the Kjellander family of Sweden. Four generations trained and worked at Kosta, from 1825 to 1924: Lars 1799, Erik 1830-1916, Lars Johan, 1868-1931, and his two sons, Åke, 1903-1989, and Nils, 1907-1991. In 1924, the Kjellanders opened their own engraving workshop in Vetlanda. The brothers, Åke and Nils, continued their work there until 1983. This beautiful vase, engraved with traditional copper wheels, depicts the arrival of Viking ships - one close by and two in the distance. The use of both sides of this rectangular vase gives the image depth and movement. (The Kjellanders did not make the glass pieces - they bought from many glass-making companies in Sweden. This one is from Skruf.)
The vase is small, 3" x 1.75" at the rim and 5" tall, and it weighs a pound and a half. It would make a stunning decor piece on a sunny shelf, in a sparkly china cabinet, or on a desk. The shape and size would make a great pencil holder, too. They certainly aren't making them like this anymore, and they are getting harder to find. The overall condition is very good, and it retains its original label. It is fully signed and numbered, Kjellander 557-1174.
