Simon Gate designed this beautiful Swedish crystal vase at Orrefors in 1935, and this particular vase was made in 1944. It is a impressive size, measuring 5 inches in diameter and 7.5 inches high and weighing 2.5 pounds. The hand-blown vase was planed by hand, creating the crisp edges of the octagonal rim. It was then engraved with the traditional copper-wheels and grit.
Gate (Swedish, 1883–1945) was a glass maker and designer for Orrefors Glassworks. He studied painting at the College of Technology in Stockholm and the Academy of Art. In 1916, when he was working as a graphic designer, he was recruited by the Orrefors director Albert Ahlin. His designs were quite conservative, drawing on traditional classical European models. Gate's energy was prodigious, and he stayed with Orrefors for thirty years. Gate died at the age of sixty two, suddenly and unexpectedly, in May 1945.
